# 📈 Levels and XP

A socketed gem grows with you.

| Gem | Gains XP from |
|---|---|
| Weapon runes, relics | Hits and kills |
| Bow gems | Arrows that hit, and kills |
| Wards (armour) | Hits you take, and kills |
| Tool gems | Blocks you mine |

Each gain shows on the action bar, with the XP of each gem:

When a gem levels up, a title appears and its numbers improve. When it reaches a new **tier**, it also changes appearance and you get a toast in the corner:

Reaching **Radiant** is shown in full screen.

Good to know:

- The shipped support gems do not gain XP.
- A gem at its maximum level stops gaining XP.
- A gem keeps its level and XP when you take it out with a Gem Extractor.
- XP from hits is added when you kill something, and counts up to 20 hits per kill. Hitting a training dummy gives no XP.
- The XP of tool gems does not count in creative mode.

The other way to level up is to [fuse 3 identical gems](/docs/executablegems/player-guide/the-gem-forge#fusing-gems) at a forge.
